What is “eID”?

In general terms, an “Electronic identity” (eID) is a means for an “entity” to prove electronically that “You are who you say you are” and thus, gain access to services. The identity allows an entity (be it a citizen, business, or an administration) to be distinguished from one another.

According to the Hong Kong Smart City Blueprint¹, the Government of HKSAR will provide all residents a free eID, which is a single digital identity for authentication when conducting government and commercial transactions online.
